Deck 1 · Development

Patterns, messaging, Lambda, and the store the code calls.

10 cards
1.1What is the difference between synchronous and asynchronous invocation?

Synchronous invocation waits for the response. Asynchronous invocation accepts the event, retries on failure, and can send the outcome to a destination.

1.2What is the difference between orchestration and choreography?

Orchestration uses a central workflow such as Step Functions. Choreography lets services react to events, often through EventBridge, without one owner of the whole flow.

1.3When do you choose Amazon SQS instead of Amazon SNS?

Choose SQS when one consumer should pull work later. Choose SNS when one publish must reach many subscribers.

1.4What does a high-cardinality DynamoDB partition key do?

It spreads items across partitions so one key does not take all the traffic. A low-cardinality key, such as a status flag, creates a hot partition.

1.5What is the difference between a DynamoDB query and a scan?

A query reads items that match the key condition. A scan reads widely and filters afterward.

1.6When do you choose DAX instead of ElastiCache?

Choose DAX when the cache sits in front of DynamoDB. Choose ElastiCache when the application manages a Redis or Memcached cache itself.

1.7What is a Lambda layer for?

A layer shares libraries across functions so each deployment package stays smaller. It is not a second copy of the function's business logic.

1.8How does Lambda reach a private resource in a VPC?

Attach the function to subnets and a security group. It then needs a NAT gateway or a VPC endpoint to reach services outside that VPC.

1.9What does Amazon EventBridge add that a queue does not?

Rules that match event patterns and send them to targets, including a schedule. A queue stores work for a consumer to pull.

1.10Which assistant does exam guide version 2.1 name for code help?

Amazon Q Developer. It can draft and review code. You still own the API contract, the validation, and the status codes.

Deck 2 · Security

Tokens, roles, encryption, secrets, and masking.

10 cards
2.1What is the difference between a Cognito user pool and an identity pool?

A user pool authenticates users and issues tokens. An identity pool exchanges a token for temporary AWS credentials.

2.2Why assume an IAM role instead of embedding an access key?

A role gives temporary credentials through STS. A long-term key in code can be copied and does not expire on its own.

2.3What has to allow a cross-account KMS decrypt?

The key policy must allow the other account, and that account's IAM policy must allow the decrypt. An allow on only one side leaves the call denied.

2.4What is the difference between client-side and server-side encryption?

Client-side encryption happens before the data reaches AWS. Server-side encryption happens after AWS receives the data.

2.5Where should application code read a database password?

From AWS Secrets Manager at runtime. Do not commit the password or bake it into the image.

2.6Why encrypt a Lambda environment variable that holds a secret?

A KMS key keeps that configuration from sitting in plaintext. A secret that must rotate belongs in Secrets Manager.

2.7What does application-level masking change?

The response or the log hides part of a sensitive value while the stored record can remain. It is not a bucket policy.

2.8What does least privilege mean for a Lambda execution role?

The role can call the APIs that function needs and nothing broader. A policy that grants every action on every resource fails that test.

2.9What does AWS STS return when code assumes a role?

Temporary security credentials. A long-term access key in source code does not expire on its own.

2.10What should you do with a sensitive value before it reaches a log?

Mask or remove it. Version 2.1 includes sanitizing sensitive data in application code.

Deck 3 · Deployment

Aliases, release strategies, images, and stages.

10 cards
3.1What is the difference between a Lambda version and an alias?

A version is an immutable snapshot. An alias is a pointer you can move, including a weighted split for a canary.

3.2What does a blue/green deployment do?

It keeps the old version running and shifts traffic to the new version, so a rollback shifts traffic back.

3.3What does a canary deployment do?

It sends a small share of traffic to the new version first, then shifts the rest if that share stays healthy.

3.4What starts a pipeline after a commit?

The source action in CodePipeline, or the repository webhook it uses. The commit is not itself a deployment strategy.

3.5When do you use AWS AppConfig?

When configuration or a feature flag must change without a new application deployment. A rotating password still belongs in Secrets Manager.

3.6What does Amazon ECR store?

Container images. ECS, EKS, Fargate, or Lambda then runs an image you push there.

3.7When do you choose AWS Fargate?

When the container should run without you managing the EC2 instances under the task. EKS is the managed Kubernetes choice.

3.8What is an API Gateway stage for?

A named deployment of the API, such as test or prod, with its own settings and stage variables.

3.9What does an AWS SAM template let you repeat?

The same serverless stack in another environment, such as a staging deploy of the functions and API. It is not a manual edit of the live function.

3.10How can Amazon Q Developer help a test?

It can generate tests and help automate repetitive test work. It does not replace the pipeline or approve production by itself.

Deck 4 · Troubleshooting

Logs, traces, concurrency, cache filters, and failed releases.

10 cards
4.1What is the difference between logging, metrics, and tracing?

Logs record events. Metrics are numbers over time. Tracing follows one request across services.

4.2What is CloudWatch embedded metric format?

A structured log line that CloudWatch extracts into a custom metric, so the application does not call PutMetricData for every point.

4.3What is an X-Ray annotation for?

An indexed field you can filter on, such as an error flag. Metadata is recorded and is not indexed the same way.

4.4What does a readiness probe tell a container service?

That the task can receive traffic. A failed check keeps traffic away. A log line that says the process started is not that check.

4.5Why raise Lambda memory when the function is CPU-bound?

Memory and CPU are allocated together. More memory can shorten a CPU-heavy function even when the function does not use the extra RAM.

4.6What is reserved concurrency on Lambda?

A ceiling on how many copies of that function can run. It also reserves that amount from the account pool. Zero stops the function.

4.7What is provisioned concurrency for?

Initialized execution environments so the first requests avoid a cold start. It is not a higher memory setting.

4.8How does an SNS subscription filter policy help?

The subscriber receives only messages that match the filter, so it does not process every publish.

4.9Where do you look first when one API call slows down?

The trace for that request, then duration, throttles, and the downstream call. A bigger instance is a guess until the trace names the slow hop.

4.10Where do you look first when a deployment fails?

The service output for that deployment, such as CodeBuild, CodeDeploy, or CloudFormation events, before you change application code.

Memory notes

Groupings that make the highest-yield DVA-C02 distinctions easier to recall.

Pull, push, route, order

  • SQS one consumer later
  • SNS many subscribers
  • EventBridge match a pattern
  • Step Functions own the steps

Token versus credentials

A Cognito user pool issues the token. An identity pool exchanges a trusted token for temporary AWS credentials. An IAM role through STS is how application code on AWS gets those credentials without a long-term key.

Encrypt before versus after

Client-side encryption happens before upload. Server-side encryption happens after AWS receives the bytes. Secrets Manager holds the password and can rotate it. Mask the value before it reaches a log.

Shift a slice versus shift the environment

  • Canary or linear a small share first
  • Blue/green keep the old copy and move traffic
  • Alias the pointer you move
  • Version the snapshot you do not edit

Log, number, path

CloudWatch Logs is what the code printed. A metric is the count over time. X-Ray is the path of one request. CloudTrail is who called the AWS API.

Draft versus the release

Amazon Q Developer can draft code and tests. You still review the diff. Version 2.1 lists broader AI security and troubleshooting help as unscored emerging topics. CodeGuru is no longer on the in-scope list.
