Exam code: AI-200Passing score 700 of 1,000Reviewed October 2026
Exam version notice: This overview follows the Microsoft study guide for Exam AI-200, skills measured as of October 7, 2026. AZ-204 retired on July 31, 2026; AI-200 is the current associate path for Azure developer candidates who would have studied AZ-204. The certification page gives you 120 minutes and requires a score of 700 or greater. Pricing, languages, and delivery options can change. Confirm them on the Microsoft certification site before you register. Items tagged Extra are useful context that the study guide does not name as a measured skill. Cloud vocabulary that is not specific to this developer role is on the AZ-900 overview.
What Azure AI Cloud Developer covers
Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate checks whether you can build and operate application code that runs in containers, stores and retrieves data for AI workloads, connects through messaging and Functions, and stays secure and observable. It is a role-based, intermediate exam. You are not asked only to define a cloud term, and you are not asked to design an enterprise landing zone from a blank page.
The work is developer-shaped: push an image, choose Cosmos or PostgreSQL with vectors, wire Service Bus or Event Grid, read a secret from Key Vault, and find the slow hop with OpenTelemetry or a KQL query. AZ-900 is useful preparation for shared Azure vocabulary. It is not a required prerequisite.
Who it is for
Developers who ship containerized apps and AI-backed services on Azure
Engineers moving from AZ-204 skills into the AI-200 outline
People who can read an SDK call, a revision, and a log query, not only a product name
What the exam verifies
Where the image runs: App Service, Container Apps, or AKS
How vectors, caches, and consistency choices fit a RAG or similarity path
How queues, topics, events, and Functions connect the pieces
How secrets, app settings, traces, and KQL prove what failed
Exam format and passing score
Figures below come from the AI-200 certification page and the study guide reviewed in October 2026.
AI-200 exam facts. Confirm the fee, languages, and testing policy with Microsoft before you book.
Specification
AI-200
Level
Intermediate, role-based. Microsoft calls the credential Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate. No prerequisite certification is required.
Length of test
120 minutes to complete the assessment. The exam is proctored and may include interactive components.
Number of questions
Microsoft does not publish a fixed count on the certification page. Do not treat a practice length as the live exam length.
Passing score
700 or greater on a scale of 1 to 1,000. A scaled score is not the percentage of questions you answered correctly.
Recommended experience
Hands-on Azure development with containers, data services used by AI apps, messaging, Functions, and the security and observability tools named in the study guide.
Exam price
Price depends on the country or region where the exam is proctored. Confirm the current fee when you schedule.
Validity
Associate certifications expire after 12 months. Renew at no cost with an online assessment on Microsoft Learn during the renewal window.
Delivery
Schedule through Pearson VUE. English is updated first. Other languages follow later.
A blank answer earns no credit. Microsoft exams do not subtract extra points for a wrong answer, so answer every question. If the exam is not offered in your preferred language, you can request an additional 30 minutes. Request accommodations before you sit if you need them. After a failed attempt you can retake the exam 24 hours later. Later retakes wait longer. Confirm the current retake policy with Microsoft.
AI-200 domains and weighting
These ranges are the share of scored content in the study guide dated October 7, 2026. The 200 practice questions use midpoints inside those ranges that add to 100 percent: 22%, 33%, 22%, and 23%.
Develop containerized solutions on Azure20–25%
Develop AI solutions by using Azure data management services30–35%
Connect to and consume Azure services20–25%
Secure, monitor, and troubleshoot Azure solutions20–25%
Domain 120–25%
Containers
Build the image, place it, and prove why a revision or a pod failed.
Deploy containers to App Service with environment variables and secrets
Azure Container Apps: environment, revisions, and KEDA-based scaling
AKS through manifests, plus logs, events, and connectivity troubleshooting
Domain 230–35%
Data for AI
The largest domain. Store documents, vectors, and cache hits the app needs.
Cosmos DB for NoSQL: SDK queries, indexing, consistency, RUs, embeddings, vector search, change feed
Azure Database for PostgreSQL: SDK, schemas, indexing, pgvector, RAG with metadata filters, connection and capacity choices
Azure Managed Redis: caching, expiration, invalidation, and vector indexing
Domain 320–25%
Messaging and Functions
Connect producers and consumers without a tight call stack.
Service Bus queues, dead-letter queues, topics, and subscriptions
Event Grid filters, custom events, and retries
Azure Functions triggers and bindings, serverless APIs, configure and deploy
Domain 420–25%
Security and monitoring
Secrets and settings outside the image, then the signal that names the fault.
Key Vault: retrieve secrets and rotate them
App Configuration for application settings
OpenTelemetry SDKs for distributed tracing
KQL for logs and metrics
Tasks to recognize
The study guide names configuration tasks more often than product slogans. Learn the paired choices first. The same map is in the core notes and flashcards.
High-yield AI-200 distinctions. Extra rows are useful context the October 7, 2026 skill list does not name.
Need
Choose
Remember
Store and rebuild a container image
Azure Container Registry
ACR Tasks can build on a schedule or a base-image update. The registry is not the runtime.
Scale a container on events without managing nodes
Azure Container Apps
Revisions keep prior versions. KEDA scales on queue depth or HTTP. AKS is the Kubernetes path when you need full cluster control.
Run Kubernetes with your own manifests
Azure Kubernetes Service
Troubleshoot with pod logs, events, and connectivity checks. App Service is the simpler web host for a single container.
Document store plus vector similarity
Cosmos DB for NoSQL
Consistency and RU budgeting still matter. Change feed reacts to writes without a poll loop.
Relational data plus pgvector RAG filters
Azure Database for PostgreSQL
Metadata filters sit beside the vector query. Size compute, memory, and storage for the index, not only row count.
Low-latency cache or vector index in memory
Azure Managed Redis
Set TTL and invalidation so stale embeddings do not win. Redis is not a durable system of record.
One consumer pulls work later
Service Bus queue
A topic fans to subscriptions. Failed messages land in the dead-letter queue after max delivery attempts.
React to a filtered Azure or custom event
Event Grid
Filters trim noise. Retries and a dead path matter when the handler is down.
Run code on a trigger without a long-lived host
Azure Functions
Triggers start the run. Bindings inject inputs and outputs. Deploy the function app; do not bake secrets into the package.
Rotate and retrieve a secret
Key Vault
App Configuration holds non-secret settings and feature flags. Do not put passwords in App Configuration.
Follow one request across services
OpenTelemetry tracing
KQL queries the logs and metrics after the fact. A trace is the path; a log line is one hop’s printout.
Extra Classic Blob-only storage patterns from AZ-204
Out of the AI-200 midpoint map
Useful background, but the October 7, 2026 guide centers containers, vector data stores, messaging, Functions, Key Vault, App Configuration, OpenTelemetry, and KQL.
Extra API Management as a full gateway product
Not named as a core domain skill
Prefer the services the guide lists unless a stem clearly points elsewhere.
How AI-200 questions are written
Microsoft says the exam may include interactive components and points you to an exam sandbox so you can try the interface before you sit. This site's practice questions use multiple choice, multiple response, matching, and ordering. Matching and ordering are extra practice for the distinctions in the study guide. They are not a claim about the live item mix.
A typical stem gives a constraint and asks for the first or best action. The image must rebuild when the base changes. The RAG query must filter on metadata. The message must land in a dead-letter queue after failures. Distractors are nearby features that solve a different problem. Container Apps is not AKS. App Configuration is not Key Vault. A Service Bus queue is not an Event Grid topic.
There is no published extra penalty for a wrong guess. A blank answer earns nothing. On a timed practice exam, answer every item, then use the review to see which domain actually needs work.
How to plan your AI-200 study
A practical sequence if AZ-204 habits still point at the wrong service names.
01
Place the container deliberately
Say whether ACR only stores the image, App Service hosts one container, Container Apps scales revisions with KEDA, or AKS needs your manifests.
02
Map the AI data path
Cosmos for documents and vectors, PostgreSQL when SQL and pgvector filters matter, Redis when the hot path is a cache or in-memory vector index.
03
Wire messaging and Functions
Queue versus topic, Event Grid filters and retries, then a Function trigger and binding that do not hard-code secrets.
04
Put secrets and settings outside the image
Key Vault for secrets and rotation. App Configuration for app settings. OpenTelemetry for the request path. KQL for the log query.
05
Drill with flashcards
Use the four decks until you can answer before the card flips. Revisit misses the next day.
06
Take timed practice exams
Work through original questions, review every explanation, and return to the notes on domains below 75 percent. Aim for a steady 85 percent before you book. Use 120 minutes as the pace of the live exam.
