Exam version notice: This overview follows the Microsoft study guide for Exam DP-700 — Implementing Data Engineering Solutions Using Microsoft Fabric, skills measured as of October 19, 2026. Azure Data Engineer Associate (DP-203) retired on March 31, 2025; DP-700 is the current associate path for data engineer candidates who work in Microsoft Fabric. The certification page gives you 100 minutes and requires a score of 700 or greater. Pricing, languages, and delivery options can change. Confirm them on the Microsoft certification site before you register. Items tagged Extra are useful context that the study guide does not name as a measured skill. Foundational data vocabulary is on the DP-900 overview; shared cloud vocabulary is on the AZ-900 overview.
What Fabric Data Engineer covers
Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate checks whether you can implement and manage an analytics solution in Fabric, ingest and transform data with the right load pattern and store, and monitor and optimize the workloads that keep reports and lakehouses trustworthy. It is a role-based, intermediate exam. You are not asked only to define a lakehouse, and you are not asked to design an enterprise landing zone from a blank page.
The work is engineer-shaped: configure a workspace, choose Dataflow Gen2 versus a pipeline versus a notebook, land incremental or streaming loads, apply PySpark or SQL or KQL, and fix a failed refresh or a slow Lakehouse table. No prerequisite certification is required. Candidates need SQL, PySpark, and KQL skills. DP-900 is useful preparation for shared data vocabulary. It is not a required prerequisite.
Who it is for
Data engineers who build Fabric lakehouses, warehouses, pipelines, and real-time paths
Engineers moving from DP-203 skills into the Fabric-centered DP-700 outline
People who can read a Spark setting, a deployment pipeline stage, and a KQL query, not only a product name
What the exam verifies
How workspace settings, lifecycle, security, and orchestration keep a Fabric solution governed
How full, incremental, and streaming loads land in the right store with the right transform language
How monitoring, alerts, and optimization fix ingestion, refresh, and query problems
How OneLake shortcuts, mirroring, Eventstream, and Eventhouse fit Real-Time Intelligence scenarios
Exam format and passing score
Figures below come from the DP-700 certification page and the study guide reviewed in October 2026.
DP-700 exam facts. Confirm the fee, languages, and testing policy with Microsoft before you book.
Specification
DP-700
Level
Intermediate, role-based. Microsoft calls the credential Fabric Data Engineer Associate. No prerequisite certification is required.
Length of test
100 minutes to complete the assessment. The exam is proctored and may include interactive components.
Number of questions
Microsoft does not publish a fixed count on the certification page. Do not treat a practice length as the live exam length.
Passing score
700 or greater on a scale of 1 to 1,000. A scaled score is not the percentage of questions you answered correctly.
Recommended experience
Hands-on Fabric data engineering with SQL, PySpark, and KQL, including loading patterns, architectures, and orchestration named in the study guide.
Languages
English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), German, French, Italian, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil).
Exam price
Price depends on the country or region where the exam is proctored. Confirm the current fee when you schedule.
Validity
Associate certifications expire after 12 months. Renew at no cost with an online assessment on Microsoft Learn during the renewal window.
Delivery
Schedule through Pearson VUE. English is updated first. Other languages follow later.
A blank answer earns no credit. Microsoft exams do not subtract extra points for a wrong answer, so answer every question. If the exam is not offered in your preferred language, you can request an additional 30 minutes. Request accommodations before you sit if you need them. After a failed attempt you can retake the exam 24 hours later. Later retakes wait longer. Confirm the current retake policy with Microsoft.
DP-700 domains and weighting
These ranges are the share of scored content in the study guide dated October 19, 2026. The 90-question bank uses an equal editorial allocation of 30 questions per domain: exactly one third each, displayed as 33.3%. This fits the published ranges but is not their mathematical midpoint or a prediction of the live exam.
Implement and manage an analytics solution30–35%
Ingest and transform data30–35%
Monitor and optimize an analytics solution30–35%
Domain 130–35%
Implement and manage
Configure the workspace, ship changes safely, secure items, and orchestrate work.
Optimize Lakehouse tables, pipelines, warehouse, Eventstream and Eventhouse, Spark, and queries
Tasks to recognize
The study guide names configuration tasks more often than product slogans. Learn the paired choices first. The same map is in the core notes and flashcards.
High-yield DP-700 distinctions. Extra rows are useful context the October 19, 2026 skill list does not name.
Need
Choose
Remember
Promote Fabric items through environments
Deployment pipelines
Pair with version control and database projects for repeatable lifecycle. A manual portal copy is not a pipeline stage.
Low-code reshape of tabular sources
Dataflow Gen2
A notebook fits PySpark-heavy logic. A pipeline orchestrates activities; it is not the transform engine by itself.
Run activities on a schedule or event
Pipeline triggers
Parameters and dynamic expressions keep one pipeline reusable. Airflow in the workspace is a separate orchestration option when the stem names it.
Restrict rows or columns for consumers
RLS or CLS
Workspace roles are coarser. Dynamic data masking and sensitivity labels add governance without replacing row filters.
Point at data that already lives elsewhere in OneLake
OneLake shortcut
Mirroring continuously replicates supported sources. A shortcut does not copy by default; a full load does.
Continuous events into Real-Time Intelligence
Eventstream
Spark structured streaming and KQL paths also appear. Native Eventhouse tables differ from shortcut-backed tables.
Windowed aggregates on a stream
Windowing in Eventstream, Spark, or KQL
Late data and duplicates need an explicit rule. “Real time” is a latency goal, not a correctness guarantee.
Fix a failed semantic model refresh
Monitor refresh, then the upstream source
A green pipeline does not prove the model refreshed. Alerts should name the failure surface you can act on.
Speed Lakehouse analytical scans
Table and query optimization
Warehouse and Spark tuning are separate levers. Optimize the store the stem actually queries.
Extra Classic DP-203 Synapse-only pipeline maps
Out of the DP-700 Fabric scope
Useful background, but the October 19, 2026 guide centers Fabric workspaces, OneLake, Dataflow Gen2, Eventstream, Eventhouse, and Fabric monitoring.
Extra Power BI report visual design as the main task
Not the data engineer focus
Semantic model refresh monitoring is in scope. Authoring layout and chart choice for analysts is adjacent, not the center of DP-700.
How DP-700 questions are written
Microsoft says the exam may include interactive components and points you to an exam sandbox so you can try the interface before you sit. This site's 90 original questions use single-answer multiple choice. They include code-reading and troubleshooting scenarios, but do not simulate every official exam interaction or provide a Fabric portal lab.
A typical stem gives a constraint and asks for the first or best action. The load must be incremental. The consumer needs RLS. The Eventstream late events must still land in a window. Distractors are nearby Fabric features that solve a different problem. Dataflow Gen2 is not a notebook. A OneLake shortcut is not mirroring. Workspace Admin is not row-level security.
There is no published extra penalty for a wrong guess. A blank answer earns nothing. On a timed practice exam, answer every item, then use the review to see which domain actually needs work.
Say whether Spark settings, domain assignment, OneLake configuration, or Airflow belongs in the workspace. Map version control, database projects, and deployment pipelines before you secure items.
02
Secure and orchestrate on purpose
Workspace versus item versus RLS versus CLS versus folder access. Then choose Dataflow Gen2, a pipeline, or a notebook, and wire schedules, event triggers, and parameters.
03
Match the load to the store
Full, incremental, or streaming. Shortcuts versus mirroring versus pipelines. Prepare dimensional models and pick Lakehouse, warehouse, or Real-Time Intelligence destinations from the access pattern.
04
Transform with the right language
PySpark, SQL, and KQL each fit different stems. Practice denormalize, aggregate, dedupe, missing values, late data, windowing, and query acceleration.
05
Drill with flashcards
Use the three decks until you can answer before the card flips. Revisit misses the next day.
06
Take timed practice exams
Work through original questions, review every explanation, and return to the notes on domains below 75 percent. Before booking, check every objective and practice unfamiliar scenarios; a repeated-bank percentage is not evidence of exam readiness. Use 100 minutes as the pace of the live exam.
